Has been created with Jordan in close connection with Clive Chapman, Managing Director of Classic Team Lotus, and son of Colin Chapman, and is the latest creation in a 14-year official partnership between the two brands.

This latest Jordan Bespoke Helmet Bag takes inspiration from Colin Chapman’s Lotus Type 25 racing car, designed by Chapman for the 1962 Formula One season and famously raced by motorsports legend Jim Clark. The result is a holdall which celebrates this famous racing car, captures the spirit of the 60s, honours the memory of Jim Clark and applauds the engineering prowess of Colin Chapman.

THE LEATHER

Specially selected Scottish Bridge of Weir leather perfectly matches the iconic Team Lotus colour scheme of British Racing Green and yellow, the flawless nature of the hides reflecting the quality buyers have come to expect from Jordan Bespoke.

A plain white roundel echoes the livery of the Classic Team Lotus transporter which has become a recognisable emblem for Team Lotus. The number 8 remembers when motor racing icon Jim Clark crossed the line at Monza 1963. His Lotus Type 25 displayed the number 8, making history as he secured the drivers’ title with 3 championship races remaining.

As with all Simon Jordan creations, client-led bespoke options are available. In recognition of the time when car numbers changed from race to race, customers can choose to have their Helmet Bag customised with a number of their choice. An owner may choose a significant number to them, such as a birthday, or perhaps to depict the number displayed on their own racing car.

A subtle design feature of the Team Lotus Type 25 Helmet Bag is the monogram embossed on the zip pulls, luggage tag and matching key ring. The ACBC monogram was created by Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman who chose to incorporate his personal monogram within the original Lotus logo.

Jim Clark, one of the greatest drivers in motorsport history, is synonymous with the Lotus Type 25. Clark achieved 33 pole positions and won 25 races from his 72 Grand Prix starts in championship races. He was the master and I, the pupil Sir Jackie Stewart OBE said of Clark. Five times Formula One champion Juan Manuel Fangio once said Jimmy Clark was the greatest racing driver ever, and Ayrton Senna admitted He was my boyhood hero. He was the best of the best.

History of the Gold Leaf Team Lotus type 49

Few race cars are as celebrated as the Type 49. Yes, it won races and championships, but its real claim to fame is that it marked the debut of the Cosworth-Ford DFV engine. A compact 90 degree V8, it delivered 400bhp at 9,000rpm and would go on to dominate the Formula 1 grid for more than a decade.  To this day, the step change in engine power enabled the type 49 to achieve the greatest ever increase in F1 performance, year-on-year.

Lotus founder Colin Chapman was instrumental in the development of this power unit. He had a long association with Cosworth because its founders, Mike Costin and Keith Duckworth, had met at Lotus in 1957. The engine was developed in tandem with the Type 49, and so the powerplant’s integration as a structural element with the monocoque was highly efficient, lightweight, compact, stiff and strong.

The car made an impressive start, with Jim Clark winning in its first Formula 1 race, the 1967 Dutch Grand Prix. The Type 49 took every pole position for the rest of the season, and Clark won three more races to finish the season third overall. Renamed the 49T for the Tasman Championship of 1968, the Type 49 carried Clark to four wins and the overall title.

The year 1968 also saw Graham Hill victorious in the F1 Drivers’ Championship for Team Lotus. The car was now the Type 49B, featuring a slightly longer wheelbase and several other upgrades. The season included a victory at Monaco, a feat Hill repeated 12 months later in the same car – the only time that’s ever happened in F1 history.

The Type 49 is also famous for marking the debut of the iconic red, white and gold colours of Lotus sponsor Gold Leaf.  In 1970 Team Lotus applied this striking livery to its next revolutionary design, the Lotus type 72, which led to Jochen Rindt’s posthumous World Championship victory.

Gold Leaf Team Lotus number 10

In the days when race numbers changed from race-to-race, the number 10 is most significant to the Gold Leaf Team Lotus era.

Graham Hill’s victory at the 1968 Spanish GP laid the foundation for his Championship year.  A poignant victory for Team Lotus in the aftermath of the tragic death of Jim Clark.

Graham’s win in a gripping last race of the season in Mexico – on a day when three drivers could have been crowned World Champion – secured his second Drivers’ crown.

Coincidentally number 10 was on Jochen Rindt’s Gold Leaf liveried type 72 when he laid the foundation for his Championship year, by winning the Dutch GP at Zandvoort; the first of four wins in a row, which signalled the extraordinary dominance of the type 72 for years to come.

The Black & Gold weave was especially appropriate for the type 88 when, after the demise of Essex Petroleum, it was re-liveried in the iconic Black & Gold colours of sponsor John Player Special, in place of the original livery of blue, red and silver.

Lotus 88 and the British GP

The Lotus type 88 was a controversial design; not because of its composite monocoque but rather its even more radical twin-chassis concept.  The Lotus 88 was entered for the first three Grand Prix of the 1981 season, but did not make it beyond practice, due to scrutineers and organisers coming under pressure from the FIA.

Colin Chapman hatched a plan to enter the car for the 1981 British GP as a ‘B’ specification of the type 88, reasoning that the home Grand Prix for Team Lotus and Nigel Mansell, organised by the Royal Automobile Club, would be the environment in which his famous powers of persuasion would be most likely to succeed.

Team Lotus presented three type 88Bs for scrutineering and when they were passed it seemed like things were going to plan.  Then the FIA weighed in and threatened both Team Lotus and the RAC with extreme sanctions if the Lotus 88 was allowed to participate.  To Colin Chapman’s fury the battle was lost.

As the Team Lotus mechanics braced themselves for an ‘all-nighter’ to convert one of the 88s into type 87 specification, Colin Chapman insisted that the three 88s be lined up in the pit lane for a poignant last photo.

The QUILTED LINING is taken from Tim’s original painting ‘ The Friendly Rivals’ the famous drivers of the late 50’s Juan Manuel Fangio and Peter Collins battling it out driving the beautiful Italian racing cars, Ferrari and Maserati just works of art. The 1957 season captured by Fangio, becoming world champion again driving the Maserati 250F an iconic car that Stirling Moss favoured for its controlled balance and pure driving ability at speed.

Tim and I have been exhibiting globally at shows for many years together, now is the time to collaborate. Our New 2021 Goodwood Revival launch – CHEQUERED FLAG Stradale (Italian for “road-going”) Holdall is the third Design to join our BRG Heritage Collection.

The CHEQUERED FLAG design inspiration is a joint celebration with our National Racing Colours – British Racing Green allowing us the pleasure to continue celebrating the VICTORIES OF OUR FAMOUS GREEN CARS since 1902.

NAPIER won the 1902 Gordon Bennett Cup – Paris to Vienna race on the 28^th June, the winning driver:  Selwyn Francis Edge,  Director of the Napier Car Company shared Great Britain’s first international race triumph and the first to wear the green – British Racing Green

I was honoured to be appointed back in 2010 for the 60^th Anniversary as the Official Partner for Leather Goods – what an unforgettable time/event spent in Carmel and was really looking forward to attending this year to celebrate the 70^th Anniversary, meeting up with friends in the World of Automotive & Motorsport – my Love & Passion, unfortunately we are unable to travel to the United States because of Covid.
